THE NEWBURY TOWN CIVIC AWARD
&

THE NEWBURY TOWN YOUNG PERSONS
CIVIC AWARD 2010

During my term of office, I have become increasingly aware of just how many people there are in our locality who work extremely hard in a voluntary capacity for the benefit of the Newbury community. I have no doubt you also come into contact with many such people.

Newbury Town Council introduced the Newbury Town Civic Award thirteen years ago. Last year a new award is being launched aimed specifically at young people up to and including 25 years of age, sponsored by Swift who are celebrating 21 years in Newbury. Both awards, which will be run alongside each other, are presented each year to ‘an unsung hero’, who in the opinion of a panel of judges, has made an exceptional contribution to the Newbury community.

I would ask you to consider who you think is eligible and nominate one or more people for the Award. Please advise the person whom you are nominating of the date of the presentation, it would be such a shame should they win and be unable to attend.

Adrian Smith; Managing Director of the Swift Group said:

"The dynamics of our community is changing, it’s time that the voices of all the people of our Town are heard and good deeds are recognised and rewarded.

It is very easy to find faults with our town and its people, and sadly we do not need to look far to find negative reports referring to our youth. Perhaps it’s time we caught our young people “doing something right” – I have a suspicion, if we try, it really won’t be too difficult; then perhaps we can put some pride back into Newbury. You never know it might be contagious, then we - as a community, will benefit and our Town will be enriched.

I see it as a real honor for myself and our company to be able to work with Newbury Town Council on this project, we are determined that the message is received loud and clear – Our Community Matters – and our youth must recognise the importance of their role within our community.

It’s about recognition, not prizes, and while all nominees will receive a certificate of thanks from the Mayor, the one nominee which the committee feels worthy of specific mention will also receive an amazing one-off experience of their choice from The Swift Group; be that a recording studio session, a track day in a sports car or tickets to a west end show – a special memory just for them – A big thank you from the people of Newbury."
