On behalf of the members of the Council, our officers and townspeople, may I welcome you to our town.

As Mayor, it is my role to represent the residents of the town of Newbury, a town with a long and distinguished history.

Mayors come and Mayors go and Newbury continues to change. Change needs managing, this year will see the opening of Parkway, I will do my utmost to help ease some of the inevitable effects these changes will have upon the public at large. I am confident that by the end of my term of office, the Vision for Newbury will be bringing many changes which will result in an even greater Town in which to live, work and visit.

Role of the Mayor

The Mayor, apart from members of the Royal Family or the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire who represents them, takes precedence over all persons in the town. The Mayor is the first citizen of Newbury and represents the Council, all political groups and the people of Newbury. The Mayor is a ‘public Relations Officer’ for the town and must be non-political at all times during his/her term of office. The Mayor, by virtue of the office, also presides at the meetings of the Council where it is his/her duty to keep order, control the conduct of debate and carry out the procedures outlined in the Council's Standing Orders.
