Local Residents Pull Together In Readiness For Britain in Bloom Judging

Newbury residents were out in force to join in a ‘Community Clean’ on Sunday 14 July 2019 in readiness for Newbury’s Britain in Bloom judging day which took place on 17 July.

Volunteers met at the Town Hall, Market Place and finished at McDonalds in Northbrook Street, who kindly sponsored the event, providing litter picks and a free McDonald’s meal for every volunteer!  The whole route was around 5km and people joined in along the way.

The route took in a number of beautiful landmarks in Newbury including St Nicolas Church, Newtown Road Cemetery and St John’s Memorial Gardens.  It also included the very pretty ‘Monkey Marsh Bee Meadow’ by the Monkey Bridge on the towpath.

Cllr Martin Colston, Leader of the Council said, “We are thrilled with the number of people who turned out on the day to litter pick throughout the town. It really shows that the residents of Newbury take pride in their surroundings and I would like to thank all of the volunteers who came along and also McDonald’s for their support”.

A25 bags of litter were collected on the day, making the whole route virtually litter free in time for the judging on 17th July.

We now have to wait until the middle of August to find out if Newbury has won an award in this prestigious competition so watch this space!
