COMMEMORATIVE EVENTS IN NEWBURY FOR VJ DAY’S 80TH ANNIVERSARY

Newbury Town Council, in collaboration with local partners, is proud to announce a programme of events to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day), commemorating the end of the Second World War and honouring those who served in the Far East.

On Friday 15 August at 11am, a commemorative service will take place at Newbury’s War Memorial, offering a time for the community to pay their respects to those who served and sacrificed during the conflict. All are welcome to attend.

Following the service, there will be a reception and exhibition in Newbury Town Hall, featuring stories and memories from local people on the war in the Far East and its aftermath.

Attendance for the reception and exhibition is free but must be booked in advance by emailing mayor@newbury.gov.uk

On Saturday 16 August, the Royal British Legion will host a day of activities at their Pelican Lane club, including military vehicle displays, historical exhibitions, and entertainment for all ages.

The Mayor of Newbury, Cllr David Harman said, "VJ Day marked the final victory in a war that reshaped the world, but it came at great cost. Those who served in the Far East displayed immense courage in the face of unimaginable hardship. As we gather to commemorate this anniversary, we honour their sacrifice and reaffirm our duty to keep their memory alive for future generations.”
