COULD YOU HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF NEWBURY?
Residents are being encouraged to consider standing for election as a Newbury Town Councillor in the local elections taking place in May 2027.
Town councillors play a vital role in shaping the future of Newbury, helping to make decisions on issues including parks and open spaces, community events, environmental initiatives, grants, planning consultations and public facilities. They represent the views of local people and work to ensure the needs of the community are reflected in council decisions.
No previous political experience is required. The role is open to anyone aged 18 or over who meets the eligibility criteria and has a passion for making a positive difference in their community.
To stand for election, candidates must be at least 18 years old, be a British, qualifying Commonwealth or qualifying EU citizen, meet one of the local connection requirements and not be disqualified under electoral law.
Before the election, West Berkshire Council will publish nomination papers and details of the election timetable. Prospective candidates will need to complete a nomination form, obtain the required signatures from electors in their ward and submit their papers by the published deadline.
To help anyone considering standing, Newbury Town Council plans to hold pre-election information sessions explaining the role of a councillor, the time commitment involved, how the Council operates and the nomination process.

We are fortunate to have dedicated councillors who give their time and experience to help shape Newbury, and we would encourage anyone with an interest in their community to consider standing for election.
We also hope residents will make their voices heard by voting in the 2027 elections, as strong local democracy depends on people getting involved."
Councillors attend Full Council and Committee meetings, take part in community consultations and local events, and represent the Council at civic occasions throughout the year. Many also serve as school governors, charity trustees or representatives on local organisations and partnerships.
The Town Council is also encouraging residents to take part in local democracy by voting in the 2027 elections. Residents can stay involved throughout the year by attending council meetings, taking part in public consultations, speaking to councillors at weekly surgeries on the Town Hall steps and following updates through the Town Council's website, newsletters and social media channels.
Whether by voting, volunteering or standing for election, everyone has the opportunity to help shape the future of Newbury.
