NEWBURY’S TOWN CRIER MAKES RESOUNDING DEBUT AT YEOVIL COMPETITION

The bell of Newbury rang out in Somerset this past weekend as our Town Crier, Steve Wallis, made his competitive debut at the Yeovil Town Crier Competition. Competing against eleven of the finest voices from across the region, Steve brought a touch of Berkshire history and modern flair to the historic gathering.

The event, which saw twelve criers assemble in full ceremonial finery, began with a vibrant parade through Yeovil’s town centre. In a true "baptism of fire," Newbury was drawn first to cry, having the distinct honour of opening the entire competition.

The competition consisted of two rounds designed to test volume, diction, and storytelling. First

the Hometown Cry: a tribute to Newbury, weaving together the town's Norman roots and Civil War history with its modern status as a global tech hub and the "home of the sport of kings."

Then came the Themed Cry: tasked with the theme of "Water," Steve took a creative approach, with a witty ode to the necessity of water - specifically its vital role in the brewing of beer!

"Being drawn first was a brisk introduction to the craft under judging conditions," said the Newbury Town Crier. "With no prior voices to follow, it was a moment of pure nerves and adrenaline. While I didn't take home a trophy this time, the experience was invaluable. These events are as much about fellowship and shared tradition as they are about the results."

Though a newcomer to the competitive circuit, Steve was praised for his inventive approach and clear ceremonial presence. The day concluded with a formal meal hosted by Yeovil Town Council, marking the end of a successful first foray into the world of competitive crying. With one competition now under his belt, Newbury’s Crier looks forward to bringing his refined skills back home, ensuring the town’s voice remains as loud and proud as ever.

The Town Crier serves as a ceremonial ambassador for Newbury, upholding a tradition that dates back centuries. By combining historical costume with a powerful vocal delivery, the Crier announces local events, welcomes visitors, and represents the town.
