NEWBURY TOWN COUNCIL ENTER 2 LOCAL PARKS FOR GREEN FLAG AWARD!

Newbury Town Council have recently entered 2 of their parks into the latest round of Green Flag judging, to retain the Green Flag in Victoria Park and achieve a new Green Flag for City Recreation Ground.

The Green Flag Award® scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

The scheme is run by Keep Britain Tidy and aims to ensure that everybody has access to quality green and other open spaces. They do this by recognising standards of good management and promoting and sharing good practice amongst the green space sector. The Scheme also recognises and rewards the hard work of managers, staff and volunteers.

Cllr Sarah Slack, Chair of the Council’s Community Services Committee, said the Council is proud of the quality of parks they provide, “We aim to provide outstanding parks, playgrounds and public spaces and the Green Flag submissions demonstrate our commitment to this. By entering the Awards Scheme, we are inviting independent judges to review our work and management of these parks to see that we are achieving a first class standard.

She continued, “We first achieved green Flag status for Victoria Park in 2019 and we have worked hard through the pandemic to retain this honour. Following the upgrading work that we completed at the City recreation ground, we now believe that this facility is now also worthy of this recognition. Our Green Flag submissions, which can be viewed on the Council’s website, www.newbury.gov.uk, detail the work that is carried out and the measures we take to make these parks so wonderful for the people of Newbury.”

Cllr Jon Gage, who chairs the Council’s Green Spaces Working Group thanked all those involved saying,  “We could not achieve these standards without the excellent work of James Heasman, the Council’s Parks and open Spaces Supervisor and we expect that the Council’s new grounds maintenance contractors, John O’Conner Ltd will also boost our efforts. Our volunteer groups and my colleagues in the Council’s Green Spaces Working group also provide essential support.

Both of our Green Flag submissions can be viewed on the Town Council’s website: https://www.newbury.gov.uk/services/green-flag-awards/
