Newbury Unveils 21st Blue Plaque in Honour of Musical Pioneer Alphonse Cary
Newbury is set to celebrate its musical heritage with the unveiling of its 21st blue plaque, honouring Alphonse Cary, a visionary entrepreneur whose work shaped the town’s musical life for decades.
On Friday 23rd January at 11am, the Mayor of Newbury, Cllr David Harman, will unveil the plaque at the corner of 47 Northbrook Street—the building Cary constructed in 1882, which today houses the Dog’s Trust Charity Shop.
From 1871 to 1901, Alphonse Cary played a central role in bringing music into the homes and hearts of Newbury’s residents. During this period, families were embracing music with new enthusiasm, filling their homes with pianos and an expanding variety of musical instruments. Cary was perfectly placed to support this cultural shift.
He provided not only the instruments themselves, but also the vital sheet music and expert piano-tuning services that allowed music to flourish in everyday life. In doing so, he helped drive the rapid social changes of the time, enriching the home lives of Newbury’s citizens and nurturing a growing community of music-makers throughout the town.
Cary’s influence extended beyond his business. A committed musician, he performed in concerts and churches and served as musical director of the ‘Great Amateur Star Christy's Minstrels’.
Born in Belgium in 1848, he retired in 1901 and passed the thriving family business to his son Oswald, who expanded it into record players, radios, and televisions. The business remained a fixture of Newbury life until 1964.
Cllr Gary Norman, Leader of Newbury Town Council, said, "We are delighted to recognise Alphonse Cary’s remarkable contribution to Newbury’s cultural life. We are grateful to Greenham Trust Ltd, owners of 47 Northbrook Street, for hosting the plaque, and to the Newbury Society for generously contributing to this tribute."
The blue plaque serves as a lasting reminder of Cary’s impact, celebrating a figure whose passion for music helped shape the town’s cultural identity.
