NEWBURY WELCOMES THAMES & CHILTERN IN BLOOM JUDGES ON A VERY HOT SUMMER’S DAY

On Friday 11 July, Newbury proudly welcomed the judges from the Thames & Chiltern In Bloom competition, part of the nationwide Britain in Bloom initiative run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The regional competition celebrates communities that go above and beyond to create greener, cleaner, and more sustainable environments through horticulture, environmental responsibility, and community participation.

Despite the intense summer heat, the judging tour through Newbury was a success. The judges were treated to a comprehensive and inspiring visit, showcasing the town’s flourishing green spaces and its strong sense of community spirit. They had the opportunity to meet with a range of local volunteer groups including Community Matters Westfields, The Newbury Nature Corridor, St Nicolas Church, The Green Gym at the NHS Garden, Newbury College, and Growing Newbury Green—all of whom play an active role in maintaining and enhancing Newbury’s natural environment.

Cllr Ian Jee, Chair of the Green Spaces Working Group, who attended the judging, said, “The hot weather did not deter the enthusiasm of the participants or the appreciation of the judges. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all participating groups and everyone who contributed to the day and to those who continue to make Newbury bloom”.

The judges expressed how much they enjoyed their visit and the opportunity to see Newbury’s community-driven projects first hand. Their feedback will be kept under wraps until the official results are announced in late September.
