STEP INTO THE STORY OF NEWBURY: POPULAR HERITAGE WALKING TOURS RETURN THIS SUMMER
Newbury Town Council’s Heritage Working Group is bringing history to life once again with the return of its much-loved Explore Newbury heritage walking tours this July, August, and September. These guided walks offer a captivating window into Newbury’s rich and colourful past, making history accessible, interactive, and fun for all ages.
The season starts at 10:30am on Tuesday 29 July, outside the Corn Exchange in the Market Place, with "A History of Newbury" led by esteemed local historian Philip Wood. From there, six more Tuesday morning tours will take place throughout August and September, each spotlighting a unique chapter of the town’s heritage.
This year’s walks include:
- Northbrook Street People
- Lost Pubs of Newbury
- Newbury at War
- Northbrook Street & Speenhamland
- Tudor Newbury
- The First Battle of Newbury
Cllr Gary Norman, Leader of the Council said, “Each of our tour leaders brings wealth of knowledge and passion to these walks. Whether you’re new to Newbury or a lifelong resident, these tours offer a fresh and engaging look at the town’s remarkable history.”
He added, “We’re incredibly grateful to our guides for volunteering their time. Proceeds from the tours will directly support the Town Council’s ongoing heritage initiatives.”

Each walk begins at 10:30am from outside the Corn Exchange—except the First Battle of Newbury tour, which starts at the Bowlers Arms in Wash Common (Enborne Street, RG14 6TW).
Led by passionate and knowledgeable local historians, these immersive tours include live commentary and opportunities to ask questions as you stroll through the streets and stories of Newbury. Walks last approximately 90 minutes, with the battlefield tour running for 2 hours. All routes are on level ground and taken at a relaxed pace—perfect for families, locals, and visitors alike.
