TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF WASH COMMON RECREATION GROUND CAR PARK AND CALL FOR COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS
Newbury Town Council would like to provide an update on the Wash Common Recreation Ground car park.
The car park was originally intended for visitors to the recreation ground and was previously managed by local volunteers who opened and closed the entrance gate each day. When this arrangement ended, the gate was left open to maintain public access.
Unfortunately, the car park subsequently became a hotspot for anti-social behaviour, including excessive noise, littering, suspected drug use and other disturbances, particularly during evenings and overnight.
In response, the Council temporarily closed the car park. Following a trial reopening, the issues quickly returned, generating further complaints from local residents. As a result, the gate has remained closed.
The Council recognises the importance of the car park for legitimate users of the recreation ground and is now exploring whether a community-led gate management system can be reintroduced.
We are therefore seeking volunteers who may be willing to help open and close the gate on a regular basis. If sufficient support is available, the Council will consider options to restore managed access while helping to reduce anti-social behaviour.
Anyone interested in volunteering or finding out more is invited to contact Newbury Town Council at: towncouncil@newbury.gov.uk or call 01635 35486.
The Council thanks residents and recreation ground users for their patience and understanding.
