YOUNG SQUIRRELS DISCOVER NEWBURY’S HISTORY DURING SPECIAL VISIT TO TOWN HALL

Newbury Town Council welcomed a group of young Squirrels to Newbury Town Hall for a special evening of history, discovery and fun, hosted by the Mayor of Newbury, Cllr Jo Day.

The visit gave the young members of the scouting movement the opportunity to explore one of Newbury’s most historic buildings, learn about the town’s heritage and discover more about the role of the Mayor and the traditions of the Town Council.

Accompanied by the Mayor and Town Clerk, the Squirrels explored the entrance hall, Grand Staircase and Council Chamber, where they learned about the history of the building and the ceremonial items on display.

The group discovered the meaning behind the Newbury flag, explored the lists of Mayors dating back to 1596 and learned about the town’s civic traditions, which have been preserved since the granting of its original Royal Charter.

A particular highlight was the opportunity to sit in the Mayor’s chair and try out the gavel, while a visit to the Mayor’s dressing room revealed the signature of Queen Elizabeth II, left during her visit to Newbury.

The young visitors also enjoyed trying on ceremonial hats and robes and learning about the special occasions held at the Town Hall. The evening concluded with a look at a rare portrait of Jack of Newbury and an introduction to his fascinating place in the town’s history.

Mayor of Newbury, Cllr Jo Day, said, “It was a real pleasure to welcome the Squirrels to Newbury Town Hall and share some of the town’s fascinating history with them. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and curiosity as they explored the building, asked questions and discovered more about Newbury’s civic traditions.

I hope the visit has inspired them to take an interest in the history of their town and given them some special memories of their time at the Town Hall. It is important that we make our local heritage accessible and enjoyable for younger generations.”

Newbury Town Council is pleased to support opportunities for young people to learn more about their local community, its history and the traditions that continue to shape the town today.
